So, I'm Reading This Book.......

Actually, the Ludinator got it at the Library one evening when he picked me up and I read it after him. It's called "A Lifetime of Secrets" by Frank Warren. He's written several other "secret" books, but I have this one in my hand. He has a blog which reads like the book. For the past three years, Frank Warren has invited people to send him creatively decorated postcards bearing secrets they have never before revealed. In this book he presents those postcards and it makes for an interesting read. The submissions are shocking, sad, bizarre, painful, endearing and funny at the same time. I was moved by one submission which is why I decided to write and share the book with you. One person submitted a postcard that read:

"I've put off telling my mother that I am depressed and need help...'cause I'm afraid she'd be angry I'm not the perfect daughter she thinks I am...."

I guess because I have two daughters, I was very moved by this revelation. That there really is someone out there that needs to live up to a standard so high that she can't ask her mother for help nearly makes me cry.

I am so glad that we have raised strong people.

I'M BACK...............DID YOU MISS ME???

Dad and I spent the long weekend in Little Rock with the family! We had lots of fun, worked hard on the Feis and who could forget Chuck E. Cheese's??? No weekend would be complete without a trip to see the big Cheese! Even if you're 84 years old! Are these not the cutest kids ever? Mackenzie did a brilliant job at the Feis - she got a 2nd and a 3rd; it's nice to have someone carrying on the dancing gene. We're back home now, safe and sound.....and tired! It's been two days now that we're back and finally, I feel back in synch. I got to talk with jJoy yesterday for about 1/2 hour. She sounds good and things are going well aboard the Jade. Their trip to Cairo was wonderful - she got to see the Sphinx and the pyramids (where it is reported that you can get a wireless signal - who'd have thought that they needed a wireless signal in a pyramid.....???). After a day at sea yesterday, they are in Iraklion today which is the largest city in Crete. They'll sail next to Santorini, Mykonos, Ephesus and then settle back in Istanbul on Saturday. She's come to like Istanbul now because her dollar is work twice as much as anywhere else, so they stock up on "provisions and rations" and also, there's a nice Internet cafe at the port where she can spend time doing her techno stuff. The next cruise leaves on May 6th and travels from Istanbul back to Barcelona. kClare is getting ready (well, her passport is packed!) to join jJoy on July 13th in Southampton England for a sailing from London to Paris (actually LeHavre), to Falmouth, UK, then to Cork, Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow Scotland, Inverness and Edinburgh, Scotland, Amsterdam, Brussels and then back to London. I thought she was going on the west coast of Ireland (from Cork to Galway to Belfast) but she goes from Dublin to Belfast and not on the west coast at all. It will be a nice getaway before she begins school. Gee, when I was her age, a getaway was when you had to pack a picnic (or maybe an overnight bag) when you were heading out to Olmsted Township to visit the Murphy relatives out on the farm!!! There's something not right here.................

April Showers Bring May Flowers...........

The weather here is beginning to turn solidly toward summer, but it's confusing to look out at the gardens and see that the tulips and the grape hyacinths are just beginning to bloom. Tulips in bloom are usually a sight you see at Easter, but wasn't that ages ago? Having Easter so early in the year makes transitioning from winter to spring to summer a little confusing. Open the windows already....let the sunshine in.

I picked some of the grape hyacinth and brought them inside. I planted them because I love the smell. It reminds me of the kids when they were little because they smell like grape kool-aid.
We haven't had all that much rain in April, so maybe that's why the flowers are slower to bloom. Maybe April showers really DO bring May flowers. We've got just over one week to produce some May flowers folks. So, let's get a move on.

IT'S A TOSS UP.............

It's Green Day 2008 today (actually, it's all week), but April 22nd is also National Jelly Bean Day. Yea, they're both important......right?

So, I guess the solution is................Green Jelly Beans.

The feis has closed it's entries for this year and not a minute too soon. Our entries are a little down this year - the whole Riverdance scene has cycled through and we're back to what competitive Irish dancing was pre-lord (of the dance, of course)!

I'm heading to Little Rock over the weekend with Dad and I'm looking forward to that.....and their weather. High 70's in Arkansas this weekend, although it does look like rain is in their forcast. I've seen the sites there are to see in previous visits, but schleping supplies for their feis in the rain does sound like much fun for anyone.

I haven't done a lick of scrapbooking since the first of April when I had to get down and dirty with the Feis stuff and I look forward to returning to that. At the end of the month my cousins C&B and I are going to Buffalo to the CK Scrapbook Convention which is bound to be tons of fun.
Have yourself a very green isn't easy to be green, I know.

Old Friends.............

Today, is "National Hanging Out Day" (honestly, I'm not kidding), we hung out with friends

We've known D&J since about 1980 or so; we worked together after I was first married and then when we had our kids. We've kept in touch all these years, but we're pretty much reduced down to getting together for dinner a couple times a year. I have a scrapbook that's made up of nothing but the photographs that people send us in their Christmas Cards. It's a fun book and I pack it away with the Christmas stuff and bring it out every year for the coffee table. D&J are the ONLY ones that have faithfully sent a picture every year since their kids have been born. (Not that sending pictures has been a requirement that when not done, puts you in a category of having little to no faith!) It's a fun book to look see the kids and families change from year to year, decade to decade.

We had dinner tonight at one of our favorite places to go......WILD MANGO. The menu is eclectic and fun; the chef very's very "Top Chefish". The staff is friendly and doting and it's a quaint and quiet place to go. It's perfect when you need to be someplace quiet enough to actually HEAR what the person sitting across the table from you is saying....tonight, we sat in one of the more "main" sections of the restaurant and it wasn't as quiet as I'd have hoped. Who knew I should make reservations. Check it out..... (although, their website needs a little help....or a magnifying glass!)

We had a wonderful time with D&J, as usual.....we miss spending time with them and when we get together, it's just like old times.......with old friends...........hanging out.........on National Hanging Out Day no less.

Well, it's official......we are returning to the ranks of "parents of a college student".....kClare was accepted to ISU in their MFA program for Fall. Yeah.........I can't tell you how excited she is.....well, I could, but you just wouldn't feel what I heard on the phone!!! School/Education to kClare is like your bestest pair of house slippers!

And, guess where jJoy is going? Cairo! She's sailing around the Greek Islands as we speak!

Everyone's happy.....think I'll go have a banana split!

This Week is National Library Week........

So, check this out..... If you like to read it's a fun and different place to share your love of books.

And, on Tuesday, the 15th it's actually "National Library Workers Day".......CCPL is giving each staff member a lunch tote to say thanks.....I guess we have enough mugs hanging around the branch !

We have a very cool Director......check out an interview that she did recently at

I guess this is the 50th anniversary of National Library Week - who knew?

So, get out there.......borrow a book; buy a book; read a book; read a book to someone...or better yet, write a book!

J on the Jade......................

It's been a couple of weeks since we were able to actually speak to jJoy on the phone but we get many emails from her and she seems to be very happy on her tour of duty aboard the Norwegian Jade. She says that their SECOND CITY show is the talk of the ship and it's a lot more performing than she envisioned but, that it's going well.

Today, they should sail from Istanbul to many of the cities in the Greek Islands....Mykonos, Santorini, Iraklion, Curfu, Katakolon ending up in Athens. They make a stop in Alexandria, Egypt as well. I actually just looked at the ship's webcam and they are sailing out of Istanbul now. The weather in Turkey doesn't look all that great today.
It's interesting that it bothers me that I am UNABLE to speak with her even though while she is away, living in Chicago or California or wherever, I might not speak to her for days and it doesn't have the same affect. Thank goodness that we can communicate by email. Transmitting either by phone or email is costing her lots, so I just wait and am happy for whatever comes my way. I'm good with that.
She's taken and sent some amazing photos......I've loaded a couple here.......they are:
Picture 1......I don't know where because I've never been there, but I'm not bitter.....but I think a garden in the park in Istanbul, Turkey
Picture 2......I don't know where because I've never been there, but I'm not bitter.....but it sure looks like the Parthenon, in Athens, Greece, and, she looks happy, doesn't she?
Picture 3......I don't know where because I've never been there, but I'm not bitter.....a view of their cruise ship
Picture 4......I don't know where because I've never been there, but I'm not bitter....but my guess is a narrow street in Venice, Italy
Picture 5......I don't know where because I've never been there, but I'm not guess? Venice maybe
Picture 6.......I know that those are her fellow cast members....but are they in Venice?
Picture 7.......I don't know where because I've never been there, but I'm not bitter......maybe a boat ride in Venice? (they were overnight in Venice)
Picture 8........I don't know where....but fabulous architecture.
So, keep sending the pictures jJoy.....we'll keep salivating over them! Good for you!

Today is National Siblings Day......

Siblings.......something I have a lot of (seen here with Dad)................Happy Day, Sibs!

The weather is finally turning toward summer and it's been a long time coming. I'm trying to stave off a cold - I'm "willing" myself well.

I had an appointment at the doctor today and after arriving on time for my appointment, I waited 30 minutes in the waiting room and 30 minutes in the exam room undressed, cold and wrapped in a paper sheet. How are you supposed to respond to the doctor when they finally come in the room and say "Oooooo, good to see you, I'm so sorry to have kept you waiting!" For 30 minutes, I sat their fuming, counting how many more minutes I'd have to get to work before I was late. If I were an hour late, they would have cancelled my appointment on me.....AND, I'm tired of hearing "you would want the doctor to spend a little extra time with YOU if you needed it". That's true, but why is it that doctors can't get their schedules to work better for US? I like her......but it's not that I think I couldn't find another doctor that I liked as well. It's just aggravating.

In two weeks, I'm going to Arkansas with Dad to visit with PJ and Judy. It's a trip that we look forward to and I love Arkansas - although I've never been there in the real heat of summer - which I hear can be torture. I'd like to get the Ludinator to Arkansas for a visit - I think he'd like it there.
