The LaBrea Tar Pits was one of the stops along our tour in Los Angeles!
It's an eerily interesting place.
They're a cluster of tar pits in LA that seep up from the
ground in an area now called Hancock park.
This tar has apparently been seeping up for tens of thousands of years
and I guess that bones of animals that were trapped in the tar have
come to the surface over the years.
It's a registered National Natural Landmark and
there is a museum that is dedicated to the study,
research and display of tar pit specimens!

Our friend, Kathy came for dinner tonight and it was so great to see her again.
Catching up with what she's been doing, her job and her kids AND grandchildren
was wonderful.  And, the weather held out.  The last two times we tried to get
together, weather was horrific (even though we managed!)

Good food (thanks chef Lude) and good company!

When my father passed away, we had all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren there.
We took the opportunity to get a few
pictures.  It was the first time in a long time that
all 12 parents were there.
I'm not sure why we didn't take that picture!
sigh!

My nieces and nephews....every one a delight!
Ready?

It's been a very busy week and the month of February is FLYING
by, thank goodness.  The Olympics are on now and always very fun
to watch.  But, Lude's been teaching for the past two weekends and
it's nice to have a night at home because he's beat!
So....tonight?  It's the Olympics for us and a good book!

I wish it WERE a lovely green shrub
that I could see out our window!

Just wanted to share a great picture (there are so many)
of my great niece playing volleyball in a tournament!
What great form, Mackenzie!

Friday, February 7, 2014

Well, I did it!
It really is kind of scary!
Severing my ties with a company that I love.
Staying home everyday!
Not having enough books to read!
Having more hours to do things I love.

RETIREMENT
Get ready for it....in a theater near you

Another great shot from my recent visit to Los Angeles.
Jess and I took a tour through Hollywood and got to see so
much cool stuff along the way......

I don't know about you, but I'm pretty tired of this weather!
I feel bad saying that because I was lucky enough to spend four
days in the California sun!  Boy, that was fun.
But, it hasn't let up here in Cleveland and it's getting old.
I don't go to work until five tonight.
This morning, I was awaken at 4:45 AM by the library
telling me that the library was going to have a "late start" of
11:00.  After a couple of hours of being up, I finally fell back
asleep on the couch and the library called again at 9:00 AM
to let me know they were pushing the late start to 1:00 this
afternoon.  So, that's TWO times they woke me up and
I STILL have to go in to work!!  HAHA.....
But, it's been a glorious day of catch up, cleaning,
laundry and a big ole pot of chicken and mushroom soup!

Monday, February 3, 2014

I had the most terrific time with our daughter Jessica
in Los Angeles this past weekend.  She's a brave girl.
And, we're so proud of the hard worker she is.  She
doesn't get a lot handed to her, she doesn't require a lot
of "things", she's proud to be living within
her means and of her own doing.  All things in
their time.  Jess knows that she's basically starting
over after moving from Chicago to NY and now LA.
Not a lot would do that.
She has all her ducks in a row now.
A place to stay that's been sweetly furnished.
A job that provides a steady income.
Lots of friends for support and companionship.
And the will to keep on going!

AND, while this Steven Spielberg might be made of wax,
in a future picture, maybe he won't be!

Here are few more pictures from our fun weekend.
This is Din Tai Fung in Glendale, where she works.

Glennis and Jessica worked together on a number of projects.
It was great to see them in a show while I was in LA.
(I'll post some pictures from the show later)

Grauman's Theater in Hollywood.

The famous Santa Monica Pier.

The courtyard outside Jessica's apartment

This is the view from Jessica's dining area
She loves that she can see the mountains everyday.
She's got a sweet car:  a Toyota Prius and gets
about 48 mpg.

Needs no label, am I right?

I think the most striking part of my trip to LA was how
"star studded" it was.  Everything was ABOUT the stars, the film
industry, the studios, the TV and recording industries.  Which for a tourist
can be very, very glamorous.  But, for the locals (something Jess
becomes more and more of everyday) it can be a hassle.
She probably sees some "star" every time she works at the
restaurant.  Just after I left her restaurant on Sunday,
Ginnifer Goodwin (who played Margene on Big Love) came
into the restaurant.  There are always actors and producers
coming in all the time.
Like I said, it's so "star studded"!!!!

I took the "red-eye" home from LA last night and arrived in Cleveland early in the morning.
I didn't sleep much, so I spent most of this morning sleeping!

I wanted to post another couple picture from our Europe vacation............

Barcelona, Spain was an architectural delight.
Every place we visited in Europe had incredible historical significance but
on top of the history, the architecture of Gaudi throughout Spain was
unreal.  Lude and I are standing across the street from the
FAMILIA SAGRADA one of the top tourist spots in Barcelona.
A project taken over by Gaudi, it's been under construction for over
200 years....but, I think it has a published completion date!

This is the side of the church
